Lyndon B Johnson Facts

Facts of Lyndon B Johnson

His parents were Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines. There were three girls and two boys: Lyndon, Sam Houston, Rebekah, Josefa, and Lucia. The Johnsons were of Scots-Irish and English ancestry. His maternal ancestors were from a Pioneer Baptist clergyman, George Washington Baines.

Baines was the pastor of eight churches located in Texas and other ones in Louisiana and Arkansas as well. He was additionally president of Baylor University when the Civil War was ongoing. Since Johnson's grandfather, Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr. was raised as a Baptist, as an early adult, Lyndon joined the Christian Church, and later he became a Christadelphian.

Lyndon B Johnson Education

Johnson entered Southwest Texas State Teachers' College. There he was active in debate and politics and was responsible for editing the school newspaper, but he dropped out of school in 1927. But returned after a year and graduated in 1930.

Beginning in 1927, he began teaching and taught at the Welhausen School, as well as at Pearsall High School and Sam Houston High School. He taught mostly Mexican students when he taught at the Welhausen School, and he remembered that he felt pain thinking about the fact that college was not an option to those children because they were poor, and that the country would need to work to main sure knowledge was an opportunity to all Americans.

Lyndon B Johnson Marriage

Lyndon Johnson met Lady Bird Johnson and proposed to her on their first date. Though she did not wish to rush into marriage, Lady Bird accepted the proposal only ten weeks later. They were married on November 17, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas. They had three miscarriages, but then had two daughters, Lynda and Luci.

President Lyndon B Johnson

Johnson was the 36th President of the United States from the years of 1963 until 1969 following his service as Vice President, from 1961 until 1963. He was a Senator, Representative, Vice President, and President.

He became President after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He finished the remainder of Kennedy's term, and then he was elected President in 1964. He was a Democrat, and during his term, he brought about the "Great Society" legislation that worked towards civil rights, Medicare, Medicaid, Public Broadcasting, aid to education, environmental protection, and the "War on Poverty." During his time in office, he also increased America's involvement in the war in Vietnam.

After serving as a United States Representative from Texas and U.S. Senator, Johnson was asked by John F. Kennedy to be his running mate in the 1960 presidential election. His presidential popularity decreased after 1966, and when he attempted reelection in 1968, he failed.

As President, Johnson was known for his "Johnson Treatment," in which he used his domineering personality in order to get politicians who were powerful to advance his legislation. He was the last President not to hire a House Chief of Staff to act as a gatekeeper at the White House.

Much of his credibility as President was questioned due to the escalation of the war in Vietnam. He did not want Vietnam to go to Communism, or he felt that he would be considered soft on Communism. He began to bomb North Vietnam in 1965 and this continued for seven years, even into the administration of Nixon.

He also increased the number of troops in Vietnam and as a result, the number of casualties was increasing. Later in his presidency, Johnson rarely left the White House.  He died on January 22, 1973, at the age of 64 from his third myocardial infarction.

His health was affected by a lot of stress over time, heavy smoking, and years of drinking. As a result, he had severe heart disease. He was found dead in his bed by Secret Service Agents with a telephone in his hand.
